As a life long resident of this City, I have never experienced so many nasty, unforgiving and generally unpleasant officers in my life as a resident here. Perhaps it's because so many are not resident in the City and believe that those of us who live here are privileged. Not so. We work hard, live in our family homes, many of which are now becoming unaffordable with the rising taxes. They are not invested in the community in which they live so being nasty is easy.
It's members seemingly instructed to focus on collecting taxes, tithes so to speak rather than protecting the public. The amount of police officers sitting at lucrative speed traps is greedy and cynical. They have long lost my respect and they forfeit any goodwill.
I resent the fact that a paid duty cop will get $195 of my hard earned tax dollars for as little as an hrs work to watch construction entries and hydro trucks is ridiculous. Commercial buildings pay taxes even if they are unoccupied and so there is a net tax loss for the city for university used buildings. This loss will have to be made up by other city taxpayers by way of increased mill rates. Therefore, city taxpayers end up subsidizing the university....and as i suggested in one column, this taxpayer cost and other granhts given to UOIT by the city should be considered prepaid tuitions for city residents attending UOIT. It could be computed accurately based on the assessment of the student's paren'ts property assessment. This was party time for them. It's the same reason anarchists tend to wear hoodies - they didn't want to be identified. Now why didn't they want to be identified? Party time. A complete breakdown in their chain of command for this event. This is not something you or I have ever heard about regarding cops on their routine patrols and I'm sure it will be identified in the court proceedings as a failure and a liability for which the gov't may have to pay millions in damages - I certainly hope so. The question of the laws they were supposedly enforcing I'm not familiar with or what the status of the court proceedings is on that subject.Site Administratorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10875957529020130816noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414859339735166257.post-64133803067141729712011-04-17T10:41:22.245-04:002011-04-17T10:41:22.245-04:00Dear Anonymous...I heard this comment numerous tim...Dear Anonymous...I heard this comment numerous times during the election so you are not alone at your disgust with Oshawa's high tax rate. Numbers of residents in Oshawa's newer areas told me they'd never have purchased a house in the city if they knew of the huge taxes here. Others told me that they moved here to downsize their houses expecting a decrease in taxation only to find they had higher taxes here than on larger homes they'd left elsewhere. A $350,000 Oshawa house pays the same taxes as a $880,000 house in Toronto----just doesn't make sense!Site administratornoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5414859339735166257.post-11384910109608603082011-04-17T08:20:57.177-04:002011-04-17T08:20:57.177-04:00Hi just bought a house in north oshawa looks like ...Hi just bought a house in north oshawa looks like my taxes will be around 8000 + Moved here from Ajax .I think what needs to be done is a tax revolt by all residents of Oshawa and if we could get the residents of of Durham region to help us by signing a petition telling Oshawa city hall to stop gouging our hard earned money . As pointed out in the article, this simply increases the overbudgetting to fund increasingly more waste, fat, and inefficiencies with each successive budget. As pointed out in the article, bureaucrats will encourage a lot of unnecessary spending to empty the till by year end. Many expenditures yearly are purchased with unbudgetted monies...eg. millions of $ of consultant reports...and $1/4 Cullen Miniatures....and the list goes on....and on...and on! Bureaucrats need incentives to save, not to spend our money. In the recent election Maryanne Sholdra who couldn't seem to stay alert through meetings narrowly missed getting re-elected and left two guys with MBA's (one a UOIT/Trent/York Business Professor) distantly distantly her dust. In a democracy, particularly with Oshawa's 70 candidate General Vote, voters are not often informed. The worst I've seen was in a Federal Conservative nomination meeting in Eglinton Centre some years ago, lightweight CBC TV announcer, Rob Parker, later of Cigarette Lobbyist Assoc. fame, told a few jokes and beat out 3rd place finisher, the founder of Toronto French Schools, an absolutely briliant guy who won international awards for contributions to humanity.
